What The Shift Is
AI search is a new category, and it is moving faster than anything search has done in twenty years. The platforms change how they choose sources without announcing it. Google ships updates that reach AI Overviews and blue links at the same time. New measurement tools appear monthly, and the research about them contradicts the research from the month before. A business owner cannot follow all of that, and should not have to.
So every Monday morning we read what changed across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and the studies around them, and we write down the handful of things that matter to a business trying to get found, understood and recommended. Plain English first. The detailed brief underneath for the marketing people. If you have ever wished somebody would just tell you what changed and what to do about it, without a webinar, this is that.
Two labels do the honest work in every issue. Confirmed means a platform documented it or the data is public. Our read means it is our interpretation, which is worth exactly what you paid for it, and we say so.
In Plain English: What Changed and What To Do
Google is putting more links in its AI answers, and official ones on top
On October 15, Google announced a set of changes to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It says it has made continued and substantial increases to the links inside its AI answers and is showing them higher in responses more often. It is also testing a new section at the top of some AI answers for what it calls the official places on the web, where someone can finish a task or get exact information, with a short note on why each link is useful. Related-article links at the end of answers are getting thumbnails, news carousels are spreading to more countries and languages, and creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode are becoming clickable. Google shared no click numbers, and when asked, said it is still working out which insights would help site owners most.
For two years the worry has been that Google's AI answers keep people on Google. This is Google pushing, at least on paper, the other way, and the official places test is the part a business should care about. When someone asks how to book with you, what something costs or where you are, Google wants to point at the one place that is definitive. That place should be your website, not a directory listing still showing your hours from 2023. With no click data, nobody can say yet how much this helps, so treat it as a direction rather than a result.
Search your business name plus book, hours, prices and location in Google with AI Mode on, and note which link Google treats as the official answer. If it is not your site, make the page that should win obvious: one clear page per task (book, contact, service area, how pricing works), the answer stated in the first lines, and the same facts as your Google Business Profile.
When ChatGPT checks the web, it goes looking for your official site
On October 12, Ahrefs published an analysis of 66.6 million logged-out ChatGPT answers and about 15 million of the web searches ChatGPT ran behind them in August and September. Only 14.4 percent of answers triggered a web search at all. When ChatGPT did search, 6.8 percent of its searches were limited to one website, and for the most-searched websites about three quarters of those targeted a brand's own site rather than a retailer, forum or review site. The word official appeared in 13.1 percent of English searches in September, up from 10.1 percent in August, and 84.4 percent of answers to factual prompts cited at least one official source. Citations of Reddit fell 88 percent between March and September.
Most ChatGPT answers come from what the model already knows, which is why being mentioned widely still matters. But when it does check the live web, it increasingly checks with you directly. If your site blocks the bot, loads slowly or keeps the facts in a PDF, ChatGPT goes to the source and comes back empty-handed. The Reddit drop is the other half of the story: the forum shortcut that worked in the spring is shrinking, at least inside ChatGPT. One study, one model, two months, so read this as a strong hint rather than a law.
Check that your site lets OpenAI's crawlers in: OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User should not be blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall or bot-protection setting. Then make sure the facts a buyer asks about, such as price ranges, service area, hours and specialties, sit on plain web pages with clear headings, not inside images or downloads.
Your ChatGPT traffic did not halve. Its name tag fell off
OpenAI normally adds a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to links in ChatGPT answers, which is how analytics tools know a visitor came from ChatGPT. Starting around October 8, as GPT-6's new interactive answers spread, many links stopped carrying the tag and some opened with no referrer at all, so those visits were counted as Direct. Profound, which tracks ChatGPT answers, measured the share of answers with a tagged link falling from about 99 percent to about 75 percent on October 9 and as low as 5 percent on October 14, then back to about 99 percent by early October 16. LLM Pulse saw ChatGPT sessions in Google Analytics drop about 46 percent on October 9 to 11 while total traffic barely moved. OpenAI has not commented.
If a report this week says ChatGPT traffic fell off a cliff on October 9, it most likely did not. The visitors kept coming; they just arrived without a name tag. That matters because ChatGPT referrals are the number many owners use to judge whether AI visibility work is paying off, and for about a week that number was wrong. Your Direct traffic, meanwhile, had a surprisingly good week.
Add an annotation for October 8 to 16 in Google Analytics and in any report that shows AI traffic, and do not compare that week with any other for ChatGPT referrals. If you need a cleaner read on those dates, look at total sessions, leads, and the landing pages that usually get ChatGPT visitors.
Bing will now show you where AI cites your competitors instead of you
On October 13, Microsoft added a beta called Topics Portfolio to the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It groups the searches behind AI answers where your site is cited into broad topics, and for each topic shows how big it is, how many sites get cited and how many queries it covers. A list called Top Opportunity Queries shows strong queries where other sites are cited and yours is not. It only appears when Bing has enough data for your site, and there is still no click data. Microsoft's own advice is to treat the numbers as directional signals, not a precise ledger.
Bing's AI audience is smaller than Google's, but this report is free, and it is the closest thing any search engine publishes to a list of questions where the AI chose someone else. Google, asked the same week for click data on its AI answers, offered a sentence about continuing to work with site owners. A beta with no clicks still beats a promise with no report.
If you have not already, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools; it can import your sites from Google Search Console in a few clicks. Open AI Performance, then Topics Portfolio, and write down the three opportunity queries closest to what you sell. Those are your next three pages, or your next three page rewrites.
Ads are coming to the most personal version of AI Mode
Google confirmed on October 16 that it has started testing ads in AI Mode for people who connect their Google apps, such as Gmail and Photos, through Personal Intelligence. In March, Google had said there were currently no ads for people who connect their apps. Google's help page now says ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Photos library, advertisers get no access to either, and sensitive categories are not used to personalize ads, while noting that the same connected information may be used to show you more helpful ads.
In Google, as in ChatGPT, the space next to an AI answer is becoming something businesses can pay for. The answer itself is still earned. For a small business there is nothing new to buy yet: Google has announced no new targeting options or controls, and this is a test.
Nothing to purchase this week. If you run Google Ads, watch where your ads appear as AI Mode placements expand. Keep the organic work aimed at the answer itself: specific, accurate information about what you do, stated the same way everywhere it appears.
Your To-Do List This Week
- Be the official answer about yourself.Search your business name with book, hours, prices and location in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, note which page each treats as the official source, and make your own page the obvious one.
- Annotate October 8 to 16.Mark the week ChatGPT links lost their tracking tag in Google Analytics and every AI traffic report, and judge those days by total sessions and leads instead.
- Open Bing Webmaster Tools.Verify your site if you have not, open AI Performance, then Topics Portfolio, and turn the three opportunity queries closest to what you sell into pages.

Google adds and raises links in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and tests a top section for official destinations
On October 15, 2026, Google's VP of Product Management Hema Budaraju wrote that Google has made "continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links in our AI experiences" and is showing them higher in responses more often. Google will test "a new display in Search AI experiences" that surfaces links to the official places on the web where a user can complete a task or get exact information, in a dedicated section at the top of a response with context on why each is useful. Prominent news carousels, which also highlight Preferred Sources, are rolling out to more locations and languages; related-article links get thumbnails and a more clickable design; and Google has started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode. Google says the number of people using Preferred Sources "has grown by more than 7x since the start of the year." No click data was included. Google: AI Mode and AI Overviews updates to explore the web
Asked for click data in its AI performance reporting, Google told Search Engine Roundtable: "We're continuing to work with website owners to understand what insights will be most helpful to inform their strategies." Search Engine Roundtable: Google updates links in AI Mode and AI Overviews again
The direction is more outbound links and clearer attribution, the stated purpose of the whole post. The test that matters most for businesses is the official destinations section, because navigational and transactional questions about a brand are exactly where a business's own site should win and where directories and aggregators often do instead. Without click data none of this can be measured from the outside yet, so the honest position is cautious optimism and an annotation on October 15.
For each client, run branded task queries (book, contact, hours, pricing, location, service area) in AI Mode and AI Overviews and record which URL is cited first. Where a third party wins, strengthen the site page for that task: answer in the opening lines, consistent NAP and hours with the Business Profile, clear titles, and internal links from the homepage. Annotate October 15 in AI visibility reporting.
Ahrefs: ChatGPT fan-out queries favor brand sites and official sources
Ahrefs published an analysis on October 12, 2026 of 66.6 million free, logged-out GPT-5.6 Luna responses and about 15 million fan-out queries from August and September 2026. 14.4 percent of responses triggered a web search, averaging about 1.6 fan-out queries. 6.8 percent of fan-out queries used the site: operator across roughly 116,000 domains, and 75.9 percent of site: searches aimed at the most-searched domains targeted brand sites rather than retailers, forums or review sites. "Official" appeared in 13.1 percent of English fan-outs in September, up from 10.1 percent in August, and "price" rose from 6.0 to 8.9 percent. 84.4 percent of fact-based prompts cited at least one official source, against 68.3 percent of comparison prompts. In Brand Radar citation data, Reddit citations fell 88 percent from March to September and Wikipedia 80 percent. Ahrefs notes this is one model over two months and may differ for paid or reasoning models. Ahrefs: How ChatGPT does query fan-out
Two findings line up with Google's announcement the same week: both systems are reaching for the official source when a question is factual or transactional. The low search rate means most answers still rest on what the model already learned, so off-site mentions keep their value; the site: behavior means that when ChatGPT verifies, the brand's own pages are what it reads. The rise in price fan-outs is worth noting for businesses that publish no pricing information at all, since ChatGPT will look for it somewhere.
Confirm OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are allowed in robots.txt and not challenged by WAF or bot-protection rules. Audit key facts (services, price ranges or pricing approach, service area, hours, credentials) for presence in crawlable HTML on clearly titled pages. Reweight off-site work away from assuming Reddit mentions carry into ChatGPT citations, while keeping them for Google, where forums remain prominent.
ChatGPT links lost their UTM tag from about October 8 to October 16
Profound tracked the share of collected ChatGPT answers with cited links that included at least one link tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. It was about 99 percent before the change, about 75 percent on October 9, about 67 percent early on October 14, and fell to about 5 to 12 percent from 19:00 UTC on October 14 as Intelligent UI answers rose to over 90 percent. It recovered to about 99 percent by 06:30 UTC on October 16, including within Intelligent UI answers. Profound notes that restored tags do not recover attribution for earlier visits. Profound: ChatGPT's missing UTM tags
LLM Pulse reported ChatGPT referral sessions in GA4 down about 46 percent on October 9 to 11 against the same days in the prior two weeks, with total site traffic down about 2 percent and no break for Perplexity or Claude. Adobe's Cedric Huesler, analyzing about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5 percent of visits, found ChatGPT visits down about 31,000 a day and Direct up about 26,000 a day for October 9 to 13 against the prior week, and reported that links opened without a referrer. OpenAI has not commented; Huesler later described it as a bug. LLM Pulse: ChatGPT referral traffic fell by almost half on October 9
The evidence points to lost labels rather than lost visitors: total traffic held, Direct rose on the affected pages, and the tag rate tracked the spread of Intelligent UI answers. It is not proven, and the Direct gain does not fully cover the ChatGPT loss, so some real decline in clicks cannot be ruled out. Either way, ChatGPT referral numbers for the period are unreliable and should not be used as a trend point.
Annotate October 8 to 16 in GA4 and client dashboards. Exclude that window from AI referral trend comparisons, or report ChatGPT plus Direct for affected landing pages. Where server logs are available, check ChatGPT-User fetches alongside sessions for a second view. Re-check the tag rate on a sample of ChatGPT answers monthly.
Bing Webmaster Tools adds Topics Portfolio to AI Performance
On October 13, 2026, Krishna Madhavan, Saral Nigam and Vivek Jain of Microsoft Bing introduced Topics Portfolio, "a new beta feature inside the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools." It groups the grounding queries where a site appears into thematic clusters, each with Topic Size (approximate total citations across all sites), Sites Cited and Queries, plus a Top Opportunity Queries table of strong queries where other sites are cited but yours is not, with a drill-down per topic. It appears only where there is sufficient data. Microsoft advises: "Treat the numbers as directional signals for planning, not as a precise ledger." Bing Webmaster Blog: Introducing Topics Portfolio in AI Performance
Opportunity queries are the useful part: a first-party list of AI-grounded questions where competitors are cited and the site is not is a ready-made content gap analysis. The report does not name which AI surfaces it covers, and it has no click data, so it measures presence rather than traffic. It is still more than Google currently offers for AI answers.
Verify every client site in Bing Webmaster Tools (import from Search Console). Pull Topics Portfolio monthly where available, log Topic Size and citations per topic as a baseline, and feed the top opportunity queries into the content plan. Cross-check those queries against Google AI Mode and ChatGPT before committing resources.
Google tests ads in AI Mode for Personal Intelligence users
Search Engine Land reported on October 16, 2026 that Google confirmed it is beginning to test ads in AI Mode for users who opt in to connecting their apps through Personal Intelligence, that ads may use insights from connected apps alongside the information used to generate responses, and that no new advertiser controls or wider rollout have been announced. In March 2026 Google had told the publication: "There are currently no ads for people who choose to connect their apps with AI Mode." Search Engine Land: Google begins testing ads in AI Mode for users with Personal Intelligence enabled
Google's help page states: "Ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library" and that advertisers will not have access to either, while also noting "That same info may be used to show you ads, so they are even more helpful for you." It adds that Google does not show personalized ads based on sensitive categories. Google Search Help: Connect your Google content apps
This closes the last ad-free corner of AI Mode and mirrors OpenAI's move with ChatGPT ads: paid placement next to the answer, earned placement inside it. Personal Intelligence users are a small, opted-in group today, so the practical effect is limited, but the direction is clear.
No media action for most clients. For Google Ads accounts, monitor placement and query reports for AI Mode traffic as it appears and keep brand safety settings current. Keep the organic program unchanged.
Questions People Ask
What did Google change in AI Overviews and AI Mode in October 2026?
On October 15, 2026, Google said it has substantially increased inline links in AI Overviews and AI Mode and shows them higher in responses, and that it is testing a section at the top of AI answers for the official places on the web where people complete a task. It also expanded news carousels, redesigned related-article links with thumbnails, and began testing clickable creator names on AI Mode video results. Google did not share click data.
Why did my ChatGPT referral traffic drop in October 2026?
From about October 8 to October 16, 2026, many links in ChatGPT answers stopped carrying the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, and some opened without a referrer, so analytics tools counted those visits as Direct. Profound measured tagged links back at about 99 percent by October 16. If your ChatGPT traffic fell in that window while total traffic held, it was most likely a labeling problem, not lost visitors.
Does ChatGPT read my website when it answers questions about my business?
Sometimes. Ahrefs found that only 14.4 percent of logged-out ChatGPT answers triggered a web search in August and September 2026, but when it searched, it often searched brand websites directly, and 84.4 percent of factual answers cited at least one official source. Make sure OpenAI's crawlers are allowed and your key facts are written on plain, clearly titled pages.
What is Topics Portfolio in Bing Webmaster Tools?
Topics Portfolio is a beta view, added October 13, 2026, inside the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It groups the queries behind AI answers where your site is cited into topics, shows how crowded each topic is, and lists opportunity queries where other sites are cited and yours is not. It has no click data and appears only when Bing has enough data for your site.
Was there a Google algorithm update in mid October 2026?
Google has not confirmed one. Rank-tracking tools showed volatility around October 16 and forums were busy, but Google's Search Status Dashboard lists nothing after the September spam update, which finished on October 8. A traffic dip during unconfirmed volatility is weather, not a verdict; check Search Console before acting.
