Is SEO dead? The honest answer.

Every year a man on LinkedIn declares SEO dead, and every year Google quietly processes a few trillion more searches. This year the eulogy finally has some truth in it, just not the truth the eulogist thinks.

What Actually Died

The thing that died is the list as the destination. For two decades the entire game was position: get to page one, climb to the top, harvest the clicks. AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot now answer many questions before the searcher ever sees a list. Position four under a complete answer is the new page two, and nobody visits page two's funeral either.

What Survived Untouched

Almost everything underneath. Crawlable, fast, well-structured sites. Content that demonstrates real expertise. Authority earned through links, mentions, and reviews. AI systems didn't replace those signals; they're consumers of them. An answer engine deciding who to recommend leans on precisely the credibility infrastructure SEO spent twenty years building. If you invested in real SEO, you're not starting over. You're closer than the businesses that never bothered.

What Changed Shape

Content strategy changed the most. The 2,000-word keyword essay built to rank is giving way to the direct answer built to be quoted. Measurement changed with it: rank tracking still matters, but the new scoreboard is "who does the AI name," tracked query by query, platform by platform. And the entity, your business as a machine-readable fact, went from nice-to-have to foundation. That bundle of changes is what the industry calls AEO, GEO, or AISEO depending on who's selling it; our plain English guide untangles the acronyms.

What To Do About It

Keep the fundamentals funded; they're the entry fee. Redirect content effort into answer pages for the questions customers actually ask. Start measuring recommendations, not just rankings: the 20-minute audit is the simplest way to start. And move now, while most of your competitors are still arguing with the eulogy. The ChatGPT playbook is the natural next read.

Questions People Ask

Do people still use Google?

Yes, at enormous scale. What changed is that Google increasingly answers at the top of the page, so being the cited answer matters more than being link number four.

Should I stop paying for SEO?

No. Stop paying for rank-only SEO that ignores AI surfaces. The fundamentals remain the entry fee; the strategy on top of them needs updating.

Is AEO just SEO rebranded?

AEO builds on SEO and changes the target from ranking on lists to being recommended in answers. Same foundation, different scoreboard and content strategy.

Will AI search replace websites?

No. AI answers are assembled from websites and profiles. A strong site becomes more important, because it's the source material machines quote.

What should I measure now?

Both: keep an eye on rankings as the credibility gate, and track which businesses AI platforms name for your money queries. The second number is the one customers experience.
